“Some relationships are like debts. You don’t fulfill them, you repay them,” says Varun Dhawan’s character in the teaser of Abhishek Varman’s multi-starrer Kalank, which was released on Tuesday.
The period drama, described as a “tale of eternal love”, stars Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur. The visually opulent teaser doesn’t reveal much about the plot but offers glimpses of the Varun Dhawan as Zafar, Alia Bhatt as Roop, Madhuri Dixit as Bahaar Begum, Sonakshi Sinha as Satya Chaudhry, Sanjay Dutt as Balraj Chaudhry and Siddarth Roy Kapur as Dev. The teaser also suggests a love triangle between Roop, Dev and Zafar.
‘Kalank’ is set in the pre-Independence era in 1945 and the story seems to be a love story between Varun and Alia’s characters with other characters seemingly revolving around them.
About the plot, one can guess Alia is from a royal family and Varun is not, he sweats it out in the workshop and fights on the battlefield. Madhuri seems to have stepped into her ‘Devdas’ role of a courtesan again while Sonakshi Sinha might remind you of her ‘Lootera’ character.
Aditya Roy Kapur features in three main scenes, one during the riots, one at his wedding with Alia and another with Sonakshi on the bed. Not much is evident about Sanjay Dutt’s character, he could be one of Alia or Aditya’s father, but yes, there is the shortest glimpse of him with Madhuri in the teaser.
‘Kalank’, from the initial glimpses features some gloriously shot sequences and looks absolutely massy or a ‘masala’ entertainer featuring every ingredient from love to conflict, action to dance.
