Bollywood stars have hidden talents, with many actors in the industry displaying new skills from time to time. Priyanka Chopra turned singer, Twinkle Khanna turned author, Sonam Kapoor ventured into the business of fashion, and Anushka Sharma quite recently turned producer. While previously, actors focussed solely on their primary craft, this generation has seen them step out of their comfort zones and explore, as well as exhibit other aspects of their inner creativity.
Many stars have ventured into writing, working on scripts, and building projects themselves, from scratch. Today, we’re taking a look at five such actors, who share a common love for writing, and at some point, finally found the courage to unleash their talent on the world.
A prominent actor and writer in Bollywood with multiple feathers in his cap are Farhan Akhtar. Hailing from a family of writers (Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani), Farhan has undoubtedly captured the skill by default. His debutant movie Dil Chahta Hai, which released in 2001, touched many netizens in a soul-uplifting manner.
Though he didn’t act in the film, his contribution to the script was totally fresh and deep. Since then, Farhan has had significant writing contribution with films like Don, Don 2, Rock On, Rock On 2, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Talaash, Dil Dhadakne Do, etc.
The very talented Kalki Koechlin wrote the critically-acclaimed film, The Girl in Yellow Boots, in which she also acted, showcasing her immense talent both an actor and writer. The film was directed by Anurag Kashyap.
The young Sumeet Vyas has worked in more than thirty films, the most recent one being Veere Di Wedding, where he was seen opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan. Sumeet comes from a writing background, and just like Farhan seems to have inherited the skill. Sumeet’s father, B M Vyas, had been a writer with NSD, while his mother Sudha Vyas, is a popular author. Apart from scripting well-known web series, he has also worked on Yash Raj Film’s Band Baaja Baaraat and Vicky Kaushal’s Love Per Square Foot.
Konkana Sen Sharma
The talented actress Konkana Sen Sharma has given some memorable performances as an actress and tried her hand at writing, with the short film, Naamkoron. Taking her skill as a writer further, she scripted and directed A Death in the Gunj, which won her several accolades.
The multi-talented actor, writer, and stand-up comedian, Vir Das is a popular face in the industry, with a reputation of good work. The internationally-acclaimed comedian is the only stand-up artist from India who has his own comedy show on Netflix, which is written by him, himself. Next up, audiences will get to see him in Hasmukh, a dark comedy that he has co-written with Nikhil Advani.
The suave Ali Fazal gained massive popularity internationally after the release of his Hollywood film, Victoria and Abdul, where he plays the titular character of ‘Abdul.’ Popularly known as ‘Zafar’ from the comic caper film Fukrey, Ali also has a knack for writing, which he is currently exploring rather fiercely. Recently turning director and writer for his upcoming untitled short film, we can’t wait to see what the star has in store for us.
